C3ing it every Sunday?

Wouldn't it be great if our group contributed in some way to Union-wide worship gatherings every time they happen? Don't get me wrong--I'm not saying that we're up for doing "worship operations" (that's setup, takedown, greeting, etc.) any more often than we already do, but perhaps we can do something smaller on the Sundays that we're not doing worship operations--things like gather to pray for a few minutes before the service starts, help with communion, or provide snacks. Each activity would need a leader--that is, a person that makes sure to show up, knows what's going on, and instigates doing it.

What do y'all think? Sound like a great way to spend time together and support Union-wide worship? Or sound like a good way to be stretched too thin and burn out faster than lightning?

Science on Tap, October 7th, “What can evolution tell us about God?”

One of Jen's passions is Science on Tap. Here's a great opportunity to see it as a forum design for people interested in the Union-hosted science forum series in 2009 (if all goes as planned).

“What can evolution tell us about God?”

History is full of instances where scientific and religious thinking have been seen as conflicting with one another. While most mainstream religious groups now reject this idea, some areas of science, such as evolution, still cause unease and discomfort among religious believers. Dr. Boose, an evolutionary biologist from Gonzaga University, will discuss some of the reasons for this discomfort, and will talk about his view that a scientific understanding of the world can actually enhance, rather than diminish, our understanding of God.

Details: TS McHughs on 21 Mercer St. at 7:30pm on October 7th. Please arrive by 6:45 if you want a good seat, and by 7:15 if you want a seat at all. TS McHughs is an all-ages restaurant and pub and serves typical pub fare as well as Irish favorites.

-Science on Tap is a place where anyone can come to explore the latest ideas in science and technology in a relaxed atmosphere.

-A forum for discussing science issues with local scientists, Science on Tap is based on Cafe Scientifique. We are committed to promoting public engagement with science and to making science accessible.

-What to expect: meetings usually last about one to two hours. The speakers give a short talk about their area of interest, followed by a break to fill up on beverages and a time for small group discussions. Afterwards there will be a question and answer session and general discussion of the topic with the speaker and the audience at large.

New C3 Group Forming

Community groups are meant to be dynamic, constantly in motion with how the Spirit of God is working at Union to make it a community of communities responding to the needs of our city.

So it is with great joy that we announce our own Dani Forbess is starting up a new Outdoor C3 Group.

A small number of people are already interested in getting it launched, and the plan is to start at the end of September, even if it starts small. They're thinking small things, like education through exploring local sites, and placing a great value on time spent together in the outdoors. This group, like Exeter C3, will make it a priority to be accessible and friendly to the participation of children. If you are interested, please contact Dani Forbess, Jera Blomquist, or Bob Tissell.

Happy September Birthdays!

This C3 has so many September birthdays, I think the topic is worthy of its own post.

So, happy birthday to Jen (17th), Dani (19th), Joshua (20th), and Doug (22nd)!
